Why it matters here

Middle Tennessee outages are not hypothetical.

Ice storms, tornadoes and summer thunderstorms have all taken down power for tens or hundreds of thousands of neighbors in recent years.

What a standby generator does

From blackout to back on, in seconds.

Here is the whole story of an automatic standby generator, in five steps you never have to touch.

  1. The grid fails

A storm, a fallen limb or a failed transformer cuts utility power to your home.

  2. The switch notices

The automatic transfer switch detects the loss of utility power within seconds.

  3. The generator starts

It fires up on your natural gas or propane, with no one lifting a finger.

  4. Your home carries on

Refrigerators, heat or cooling, lights, internet and more keep running.

  5. The grid returns

The switch moves your home back to utility power and the generator rests until next time.

Questions

Quick answers.

What size generator do I need?

It depends on your loads, especially air conditioning, a well pump and an electric range. Try the Generator Size Calculator, then we confirm on site.

Standby or portable?

A standby generator starts automatically and is the convenient whole-house answer. A portable is cheaper but manual and needs a safe connection. See our guide for a full comparison.

Which brands do you install?

Generac and KOHLER are our main focus, and we also work with Cummins, Caterpillar, Briggs & Stratton, Champion, Westinghouse and Honda.

How long does installation take?

Permitting comes first. Once approved, many residential installs take one to a few days of on-site work, depending on gas, pad and electrical details.

Do I need a permit?

In most places, yes. Generator electrical and gas work are permitted and inspected. We pull the permits for you.

Will solar panels work in an outage?

Grid-tied solar alone shuts down during an outage for safety. A battery or generator provides backup power.
