The short version
Both brands make excellent home standby generators. Generac has the larger catalog, the broader dealer network and a battery line. KOHLER is prized for quiet, polished operation and for PowerBoost technology. For most homes, either will do the job when it is sized and installed properly.
What Generac says
Generac has built generators since 1959. Its standby catalog runs from under 10 kW to over 150 kW, home standby units come with a 5-year limited warranty and 24/7 support, and Mobile Link provides remote monitoring. The Guardian Series covers 10 to 26 kW; XG and Protector cover larger loads.
What KOHLER says
KOHLER home generators run on natural gas or propane and feature PowerBoost technology to start large loads without dropping power to other appliances. KOHLER also cites commercial-grade engines, weatherproof enclosures tested to withstand 181 mph winds and a free Energy Management app. KOHLER's energy business now operates as Rehlko.
Side by side
Size range: Generac is broader; KOHLER residential families are concentrated in the 14 to 26 kW class. Monitoring: both offer free apps. Battery and solar: Generac offers PWRcell 2. Noise: both offer quiet modes; placement matters more than the brand name.
How to choose
Choose by loads first, then by service. Which brand has a strong technician network near you? Which fits your budget, panel and gas supply? We install both and will show you the quote for each, side by side.
Specifications come from each manufacturer's website and change. Always confirm current models and warranty terms before you buy.
