Generator Warranties and Service Plans Explained

What warranties usually cover, what voids them and how to keep your coverage healthy.

What manufacturers publish

Warranty terms vary by brand and model. For example, Generac states a 5-year limited warranty on its home standby generators, and Cummins describes a base warranty with optional extended coverage up to 10 years through an authorized dealer. Always read the current terms for your exact model.

Limited means limited

Warranties typically cover defects in materials and workmanship under normal use, subject to conditions. They usually do not cover damage from improper installation, neglect or missed maintenance.

What can void coverage

Unlicensed or improper installation, skipped maintenance, using the wrong fuel or modifying the unit can cause problems. Keep service records.

Labor warranty

A separate warranty on the installer's labor and workmanship matters too. Ask for it in writing.

Service plans

A maintenance plan keeps you on schedule and gives you a service history. It is one of the easiest ways to protect your investment.
