Why permits matter
A permit makes sure a second set of trained eyes inspects the gas and electrical work that protect your family. It also keeps your insurance, your warranty and your future home sale clean. An unpermitted generator can create problems at resale and with insurers.
Electrical permits in Tennessee
The State of Tennessee requires an electrical permit before installing electrical wiring that requires inspection, and the State's permit FAQ explains who may purchase different permit types. Many cities and counties run their own inspection programs. In Nashville and Davidson County, trades contractors must be registered with Metro. Your installer should know the process for your location and handle it.
Gas and fuel work
Gas piping and propane connections are also typically permitted and inspected. Correct sizing, pressure testing and shutoffs are part of a safe installation.
Clearances and placement
Manufacturers and local codes set minimum distances from doors, windows, vents, property lines and structures. HOAs and historic districts may add appearance rules. We confirm all of this during the site visit.
Who should pull the permit
The licensed contractor doing the work should pull it. Be cautious about anyone who suggests skipping permits, or who asks you to pull one for work you will not do yourself.
We handle permits, inspection scheduling and clearance checks on every installation, so the paperwork is never your problem.
